What is it like to work with me?

While every client and every project is unique, you’ll find that a few common threads are woven throughout my work.

  • Unsurprisingly, I’m going to ask a lot of questions.
  • I’m going to document our work together. Extensively. (And it will almost certainly involve some drawing.) I find that “working out loud” is a great way to build trust and help people understand my process.
  • I’m going to focus on the user / employee / member / visitor experience, and ask that you do the same. Empathy is an essential part of this work, and knowing our constituents’ needs, motivations, and pain points can help us create more viable, relevant solutions.
  • I’m going to talk a lot about assumptions, and try to expose and challenge them every step of the way. This is one of the best parts about being a questionologist, and I hope you come to enjoy it as well.

What do I expect from you?

If you’re here, and you’re still reading, I suspect that we’ll get along just fine. But I like to make lists, and it’s only fair that I share what I’m looking for in my client partners:

  • Above all, you’ll need to be open-minded and willing to look at things from perspectives you may not have considered before. And even if you already have that mindset, sometimes looking at a problem through the eyes of an end user / employee / visitor can challenge your long-held beliefs.
  • I shouldn’t have to mention it, but of course you’ll need to be willing to answer questions! And I’d be offended if you didn’t formulate and ask some of your own.
  • You’re going to need to roll up your sleeves during our time together. I’m going to be asking for feedback, looking for more information, and checking my own assumptions—and for that, I’ll need your active participation.
  • Do your best to avoid jumping into solution mode right away. I like to stay in the “problem space” for as long as possible, even if it’s uncomfortable. This can be challenging, but I swear it’s worth it.
  • Expect to be changed. If we’re not both different (and, ideally, improved) people by the end of our engagement, then I’ve not done my job properly. Transformation happens through active inquiry, and that’s what we’re setting out to do.
